The spirit of the mind

be here and forget everywhere else

Relax in the serenity and beauty of courchevel

Here, whatever your desires and your level, the instructors and professionals of the mountains, will share their enthusiasm and their perfect knowledge of the ski area of the 3 Valleys. Experience, competence, diversity, conviviality: The instructor is here to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

At Courchevel 1850, the instructors are ski technicians and qualified teachers with whom you will progress safely. They are also ambassadors of their country, men and women with the mountain close to their heart, ready to share with their customers much more than a ski lesson.

Totally adaptable, attentive and available, they can  welcome Courchevel customers in 12 different languages.
A requirement in the recruitment of instructors and with the effectiveness of their teaching methods means that the ESF French Ski School enjoys an excellent image in France and the world.

The ESF of Courchevel 1850 also counts some instructors who were or still are skiers with outstanding achievements:
  • Many former members of the French Ski Teams in all disciplines: Nicolas DESSUM, Freddy RECH, Muriel BUTHOD, Florine DE LEYMARIE, etc.
  • Some high-level snowboard riders (Charles BRIANT, Claude CHEDAL), in ski mountaineering (Guillaume PRIN, Paul MOLLIERE, Cédric CUNIN)
  • Chloé Georges selected for the Vancouver Olympic Games in boarder cross

There are also several coaches of the national teams as well as trainers at the National School of Ski and Mountaineering in Chamonix.

70 years of love

Born in 1937, the Ecole Française du Ski (ESF) was founded under the guide of Georges BLANCHON (General Secretary of the FFS), Emile ALLAIS (world skiing champion), Charles DIEBOLD (Creator of the 1st Ski School) , Paul GIGNOUX (Captain of the French Team) and Léo LAGRANGE (Minister of Sports).

In 1945, it changed its name and became the ESF. Émile ALLAIS, appointed technical director at the time, set up the teaching method, which became the French skiing method and that ESF instructors still teach by today and at an early age students benefit from at Club Piou Piou. This technique is based on the parallelism of the skis even in the corners. This teaching is applied today in all ESF schools.

Initially, the ESF had 41 schools with 200 instructors. Today the ESF has 250 offices and counts 17 000 instructors; it is the largest ski school in the world.

In 1945, le Syndicat National des Moniteurs du Ski Français (the National Union of Monitors of French Skiing (SNMSF) was created to look after the interests and the evolution of the profession and of the ESF. Since the creation of the SNMSF, five presidents have succeeded each other: Gaston CATHIARD (the founder), Edgard COUTAZ, Germain COCCO, Bernard CHEVALLIER and Gilles CHABERT who still presides today.

The instructors of the French Ski School, nicknamed the Pulls Rouges (Red jumpers) are known and recognised throughout the world thanks to their red ski outfits. Each year, more than 300 instructors are graduated at the Red Legend ceremony.
